23 November 2011

By Marilyn Anim-Addo-Allen

The  Adinkra Symbol: Love Never  Its Way Home

Love grows at its own pace.
You might try to force it,
But love knows where its home is.
Love also knows how to get home.
It always find its way home.
It will bring you peace,
No matter how long it takes.
But it has to be in the right place,
And it has to be the right time,
To make your heart its home.

Question and Answer...

Interview by Freda Pintor

5 November 2011

Who do you Counsel in your Private Practice?

I offer emotional support to Adolescents (Young Adults) and people with unresolved Adolescent (Young Adults) Issues.

Have you always worked in this field?

No, I used to be a lecturer in Higher and Further Education for over a decade and part of my responsibilities was being a pastoral carer. It became apparent that some of the students had issues that interfered with their ability to focus on their studies and so they struggled academically. I undertook some research and found  that some adolescents needed emotional support to achieve both academically and in their personal lives. I decided to change vocation and undertake the necessary training to be a Therapist. It was the best decision I ever made professionally!

What is your core belief?

I believe in the power of the attachment we have to our parents or principal carers  as children and the impact it has on us in later life.

Where do you work from?
I work from my Private Practice in Crouch End, North London. I am also an Associate Counsellor in a London University.

What do you like doing aside working?

I like cooking and baking to help me to relax after work. Naturally, I like eating what I cook or bake!

Permission to Love

By Marilyn Allen

I have often wondered why some people seem to be 'lucky' in love and others are not. Perhaps people who are not ready to love their inner selves do not have capacity to love others, but how do they know this? Well, would it not be a wonderful thing to try and make time for ourselves as individuals, to understand what we need and want and give ourselves permission to love ourselves for who we are? Would that not be preferable to trying to be what others want us to be in order to be and feel loved? Surely it would be tiring to pretend to be someone  just so you can be loved, because, when you eventual reveal who you truly are ....

Be proud of who you are. Give yourself permission to love. Be happy.

Are you aware that you can get cancer from not protecting your head with sunscreen, especially if you are bald?  Think about it, the skin on your head is part of you and thus should be covered with sunscreen just like the rest of you body. Vanity does not come into it! Take care of your self!
